Chiang Mai saw the unveiling of a new observatory on the highest mountain in Thailand yesterday. The opening ceremony was presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri.
The observatory is aboard the Doi Inthanon base of the Royal Thai Air Force and was made possible tdue to a collaboration of the Royal Thai Air Force, The Digital Economy and Society Ministry and the Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT).
The telescope was provided by NARIT, the location by the Royal Thai Air Force and the networking and training for personnel was handled by the Economy and Society Ministry.
The facility contains a 0.7-metre reflecting telescope and will be utilized for viewing comets and asteroids that are passing near to the Earth.
The Minor Planet Center of Thailand, who is responsible for observing orbits of asteroids and comets, was also a part of the collaboration with NARIT.
